What is authentic and meaningful assessment?

On May 26, educators gathered at Cowichan Secondary for the opportunity to find out. Led by Brad Cunningham, of Reynolds Secondary in the Victoria School District, the conversation addressed a need to teach big ideas vs. detailed content.

Brad demonstrated how he uses QUIO to gather and share evidence of student learning. His students are able to set their own learning goals and document their progress toward those goals via his badges approach. Participants were able to go through the basics of setting up classes and creating learning plans to clearly see how QUIO works to represent students’ true learning, while allowing them choice in how to pursue it.

Most importantly, we all left feeling invigorated to continue the important work of improving our practice to the benefit of our students.
